Studio Assistant, Sculpting

Artist's Studio

The studio of an internationally exhibited artist is seeking full-time Studio Assistants to support the production of sculpture and other artworks. The assistant will work meticulously, both independently and as part of a team, under the direction of the artist.

Employees at the studio have benefits including medical insurance, 401(k) plan, paid vacation time as well as 5 holidays per year, and paid time off after the first year of employment. Full-time employees work Monday-Thursday, 10 am - 6 pm with a paid lunch hour mid-day.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities at the studio include:

  • Preparing raw materials

  • Sculpting with materials like foam, clay, fiberglass, or epoxy.

  • Assisting with making molds and castings

  • Assembling components into finished artworks under the direction of the artist.

  • Varied day-to-day tasks typical of creative production or upkeep in an artist’s studio.

Requirements

A Successful candidate would ideally have the following qualifications:

  • To be considered for the position, candidates must have a demonstrated ability to render three-dimensional forms (such as objects or people) in clay, plaster, or similar materials.

  • Prior experience with three-dimensional fabrication and with tasks involving dexterity.

  • Experience handling works of art with care and being mindful of best practices.

  • Strong focus and attention to detail when working independently and in a team setting.

  • Ability to follow directions from the artist and team head while adapting to the dynamic needs of the studio. Applicants should be able to prioritize a variety of tasks throughout long-term projects.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to maintaining a clean workspace.

  • Knowledge of papermaking is not a requirement, though it would be of interest to the studio.

  • Familiarity with contemporary art or art history may be helpful, though is not a requirement.
