Doug Aitken Workshop is seeking an experienced freelance Digital Sculptor to assist in the development of a new body of sculptural work.

The position focuses on creating large-scale, organically shaped sculptures with exceptional refinement and intricate surface detail. Working directly from the artist’s sketches, references and direction, the selected candidate will develop highly resolved digital sculptures for fabrication through large-scale 3D printing and casting.

The ideal candidate possesses exceptional artistic judgment, works quickly and efficiently, and has a refined understanding of sculptural form. We are looking for someone capable of translating artistic direction into digital sculptures that retain the subtlety, hierarchy and material quality of hand-sculpted work.

Responsibilities

  • Develop highly detailed digital sculptures from sketches, reference material and studio direction.

  • Produce large-scale organic forms with exceptional surface quality and refinement.

  • Revise and iterate models quickly in response to feedback.

  • Prepare clean, production-ready mesh files suitable for digital fabrication, 3D printing and casting.

  • Coordinate with the studio team to ensure models meet fabrication requirements.

Requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in ZBrush and digital sculpting workflows.

  • Demonstrated ability to sculpt highly refined organic forms.

  • Exceptional aesthetic judgment with a strong understanding of proportion, scale, texture and composition.

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently while maintaining an extremely high level of quality.

  • Highly organized, detail oriented and able to work independently within tight deadlines.

  • Experience preparing models for 3D printing, digital fabrication or casting workflows preferred.

  • Traditional sculpture, fine art, practical effects or model-making experience is highly desirable.

Portfolio Requirements

Applications without a portfolio of relevant sculptural work will not be considered.

We are particularly interested in portfolios demonstrating:

  • Organic sculpture

  • Natural forms and textures

  • Botanical, geological or biological studies

  • Contemporary sculpture

  • Physical sculpture translated into digital media
