Atthowe is looking for an Art Handler, Apprentice - a fantastic opportunity for a hands-on art services technician in training. This will be someone who is primed to provide excellent customer service with museum quality art installation services for both private and public entities. This person will report to the Crew Manager and will work closely with a team of well-honed technicians, riggers, project manag-ers, and schedulers to service art installation, transportation, crating, and packing jobs both indoors and out. Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform supervised hands-on lifting and manipulation of artworks and museum objects as needed for their transportation, packing, crating, installation, storage, and display

  • Learn and abide by museum-standard installation methods and professional art handling proto-cols

  • Learn to legibly complete paperwork with high attention to detail, obtaining required signatures

  • Gain art handling skills and continually increase knowledge and experience in specialized skill designations such as: art installation, construction, art packing, crating, rigging, registration, and driving

  • Gain knowledge in handling differing objects safely and learn the materials that make up the ob-jects and how these materials may react with installation or packing materials

  • Gain experience in safely driving large vans and box trucks, learning and abiding by company and DOT regulations

  • Maintain an orderly and well supplied truck

  • Learn typical parties and agreements involved in the transportation, handling, and installation of artworks and museum objects

  • Gain experience building effective client relationships through professional, warm, and articulate communications

  • Prioritize efficient and detailed communication and registration information transfer between company departments

  • Gain increased knowledge of, complete and maintain safety certificates for: forklift operator, scis-sor/boom lift operator, fall protection, scaffolding

  • Handle artwork under supervision of senior staff only

  • Other assigned tasks as required by the job

Typical Supervised Tasks:

  • Lift and carry artwork and museum objects properly

  • Use company paperwork to record materials used and time spent on jobs

  • Safely strap and secure loads in trucks and vans

  • Uncrate and/or unpack objects using company protocols

  • Soft-pack and/or crate-pack objects using company standards

  • Clean trucks after use, wash outside periodically and windows daily

  • Sort used materials in to trash and recycling and place in appropriate spots

  • Safety, protection, and stewardship of all artwork and objects in our custody

  • Excellent communication, cooperation, and attention to detail with clients, colleagues, and other parties

  • Knowledge of and adherence to company standards and policies

  • Protect all confidential information, including client information, job details, images, and privi-leged company information

  • Maintain, clean, and safe-guard all tools, trucks, equipment, and other company property, both personal and shared

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, sit, bend, lift, and use hands, sometimes for extended periods of time

  • Regularly work on boom-lifts, scissor lifts or ladders for long periods of time

  • Regularly be in truck cab for extended periods and must exhibit physical agility to enter and exit trucks and/or trailers

  • Exposed to outside weather conditions on a frequent basis

  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds unassisted and must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 300lbs with assistance of mechanical equipment

  • Regular use of mobile phone required for workflow

Requirements
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record at the time of, and for the duration of employment

  • Complete and pass STA (Security Threat Assessment) application and verification

  • Able to work as part of a team, contribute to cooperative problem solving, and appropriately escalate problems to leadership as needed

  • Able to follow detailed instructions and strict protocols while also utilizing critical thinking to solve scope changes, sometimes under pressurized time constraints

  • Able to work a flexible schedule as weekend, overtime, overnight, out of town, and holiday work may be necessary

  • Art handling experience a plus but not required

  • Forklift operation and large van or box-truck driving experience a plus but not required
